Ludwigia sedioides – The Mesmerizing Mosaic Plant for Ponds & Aquatic Displays

Ludwigia sedioides, also known as the Mosaic Plant, is one of the most visually captivating aquatic plants in the hobby. Its unique geometric leaf arrangement, where diamond-shaped leaves form symmetrical rosettes, creates the illusion of a living mosaic that floats elegantly on the water’s surface. As the plant matures, the outer leaves transition into red or bronze hues, contrasting beautifully with the green center.

Native to Central and South America—especially widespread in countries like Venezuela and Mexico—Ludwigia sedioides thrives in stagnant or slow-moving warm waters and is often found growing in dense colonies in ditches and shallow ponds.

Synonyms: Ludwigia sedoides, Jussiaea sedoides Humb. & Bonpl. (1805), J. sedoides H.B.K. (1823)
Family: Onagraceae
Etymology: Ludwigia honors C. F. Ludwig, while sedoides means "similar to Sedum" due to its rosette leaf pattern.

🌿 Key Features:

  • Common Name: Mosaic Plant

  • Scientific Name: Ludwigia sedioides

  • Leaf Shape: Rosette-like, diamond-shaped leaves (1.5–4 cm long)

  • Coloration: Green with bronze-red margins, more intense under full sun

  • Flowers: Small, solitary yellow flowers (~2 cm diameter) appear on stems

  • Growth Form: Floating with occasional rooting at nodes in shallow substrate

  • Chromosome Number: n = 8

💡 Optimal Growing Conditions:

  • Lighting: Full sun to high light (required for red coloration and optimal growth)

  • Temperature: 72–86°F (22–30°C); native habitats reach up to 34°C (93°F)

  • Water Chemistry:

    • pH: 6.3–6.9

    • GH: 2.5–4 dH

    • KH: 2 dH

    • NH₄⁺: ≤0.5 mg/L

    • CO₂: Beneficial, though not always required

  • Substrate: Loamy, nutrient-rich soil if planted; optional for floating setups

  • Water Flow: Prefers still to slow-moving water

  • Winter Survival: Not frost-hardy; overwinter indoors in greenhouse or paludarium

🪷 Aquascaping Benefits:

  • Provides a visually striking floating pattern ideal for ponds and water gardens

  • Naturally helps reduce algae by shading the water’s surface

  • Offers cover for fry, amphibians, and surface-dwelling species

  • Bright yellow flowers add seasonal interest during summer growth

🌱 Propagation & Growth:

Ludwigia sedioides is propagated by cutting stems and replanting or floating them. Roots will form at the nodes when allowed to contact substrate. Best planted in shallow, calm areas of a pond or floated where sunlight is abundant. Regular trimming promotes denser rosette formation.

  • Nutrient Substrate: ✅ Required if planting

  • Can Be Grown Emersed: ✅ Yes

📦 What You’ll Receive:

Enhance your aquatic display with our premium cuttings:

  • Loose Fresh-Cut Plants: Approx. 3 unrooted stems of Ludwigia sedioides — ideal for floating or planting in shallow pond margins
